I've always been under the impression that 12" barrel is required for full powder burn, anything shorter and you have more muzzle flash (or flame), that could be unwanted in certain circumstances. Can anyone comment on their experience with this weapon?

Charles, this is correct Sir. It works but there is lots of unburnt powder and muzzle flash. There is ammunition to remedy this for barrels under 12 inches  :   https://www.budsgunshop.com/search.php/type/Ammunition/q/sbr%205.56/sort/relevance

yes the shorter barrel is less effective but easier to carry
