It's part of the saftey where you out the hammer

Small cuts in the back of the cylinder in between each round where the hammer can be lowered so the gun can be carried without the hammer resting on/above a live round. More here: https://northamericanarms.com/safety/

The notches are for safety, as there's not much of a safety. There is a notch between each cylinder chamber. If you carry this then you'd want to rest the hammer in a notch. It was my pleasure to assist you.
