Not sure why. You can call S&W Customer Service at 800-331-0852 Mon-Fri 8:00AM-8:00PM Eastern Time (They will take care of you). I would try a disassemble/reassemble of the mag 1st and try loading again.

Springs are brand new and stiff still. As you use it they will soften up and make loading more rounds much easier. I'd leave the magazine loaded even when not in use to help break the spring in and soften them up.
