I know it's a high point and I'm embarrassed to ask but it's a good price and I'm on a budget. I'm just curious is this a blowback design? I'm asking because it's so bulky. Or is it relying on the recoil to cycle rounds?

Jeff, I have an entire collection of Hi-Points in my several hundred handgun collection. They have the barrel as part of the frame and are straight b;owback.
