for a 1st pistol I would recommend a 9mm over a 40 the berretta is a good gun but so are many others. I strongly advise you to go to a range that rents guns and try as many different ones as you can before purchasing one. you will find that some just fit and feel better. some you will not like and some you love. get one that you enjoy and shoot well

Albert, the Beretta APX is a wonderful handgun as far as ergonomics and reliability. Usually if it fits you well and comfortable, you will shoot it well. I would head down to a local dealer and try handling a few models for direct feel. Trust me, your brain will click when you handle the right pistol as this will be different for different folks.
