I would prefer on of the buck shot sizes to ensure enough penetration but in a pinch it will do the job at close range

Dan, they would be marginal. #4 Buck shot would be way more effective while limiting over penetration for pass through towards potential loved ones unless you live alone.

at a close enough range even #9 shot can hit like a slug and be lethal. so it will depend on the range
