Richard, the Springfield XD & S&W M&P are very similar feature and reliability wise Sir. This one is a coin toss as you won't lose anything going with either one. I would check to see which one has the most readily available 22LR conversion kit and go with the one that's easier to acquire the kit/price for. Cheers and you and yours stay safe Sir!

advantage arms makes conversion kits for the XD series of guns http://www.advantagearms.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=AASOS&Category_Code=XDFitTable I dont know of one that fits the M&P  I have a 1911 conversion kit from advantage arms and it has been great so my recomendation would be to get the springfield xd
