Monica, Many people would say that a SA XD Mod.2 would be a good start. Whatever firearm you get train with it. Know how it functions. The manual of arms. How to clean and maintain. Start with whatever you want and grow from there. Practice, practice, practice. Dry fire. Get to the range. Learn about the shooting sports.

it is a great 1st gun for range and home defense . but I suggest that you go to a local range that rents guns and try out as many guns as possible before buying one. After shoot a few guns you will have a better understanding of what fit and works best for you

Monica, yes Ma'am, it is a better fit than the 5 inch Mod 2. Buy a handgun based upon how you plan to use it. Home defense, carry or both. If home defense then a little larger gun is fine and if carry is involved, a smaller model is preferable for carry comfort. Remember that the smaller firearms can use the larger magazines for capacity at home. Local gun stores are a fabulous place to visit and see first hand what fits you best as fitment will be different for different folks. Monica. 9mm is a great caliber with low recoil. It is a very common caliber and can usually be found everywhere. Ammo is a little tight due to covid and then protests disrupting shipping and manufacturing. It is coming back slowly but surely now. As for the Springfield XD mod 2. Great firearm. I own one as well. The full size version you are looking at is a little bigger than the subcompact version, but will be more accurate. It is a great, inexpensive starter pistol. There are other more expensive guns out there with better triggers and such, but if Springfield has anything down it is dependability. So in my opinion great choice! Stay safe and have a great day!!
