If the hollow points are not jacketed or coated there is going to be leading of your barrel. Any jacketed hollow point should be good for self defense and not over penetrating.

I'll add that having a "bonded" hollow point for a deffensive round is also important, Bonded hollow points are bullets with the copper casing molecularly bonded to the lead core. Non-Bonded hollow points feature the copper casing simply formed around the lead core. Bonded hollow points will retain more weight and mass upon striking a target, whereas non-bonded hollow points tend to lose mass and energy. And getting more specific then that I have Federal HST 124 grain ammo in all of my deffensive 9mm's. HST functions like a bonded JHP without actually being bonded, and has excellent and consistent expansion ( more expansion= larger wound channel= quicker bleed out and more soft tissue damage, to stop threats quicker. Speer gold dot, Winchester deffend are also good rounds.
