Steven, Low recoil 12ga 00 Buck will work fine for defense. For in home, #4 Buck is optimal for less potential for over penetration but low recoil 00 Buck works as well. I highly recommend patterning a few different brands and picking the ones that pattern best in your shotgun. Cheers and stay safe!

I personally prefer high brass #4 shot in the house. Even less chance of over penetration. I do not want to get a family member in another room. Modified choke will hold plenty tight down the hallway.
