You can manually load one round in the chamber at a time and it will fire without issue and possibly even eject. But loading shorts into the magazine will not work well and will not feed/cycle reliably if at all.
Gloria, you can but there will not be enough power to cycle the action (you will need to hand cycle). Accuracy will also be less than optimal by the bullet jump into the chamber. It will also cause some carbon and / or lead buildup in the throat area of the chamber that would normally be occupied by the longer .22lr case, causing tight chambering when switching back to .22lr. Cheers and stay safe!
If you can get it to load it will shoot. I do not know if the short will work in the long rifle magazine, or if they have the power to operate the action.
