Hi, It is most reliable with Winchester AA super handicap birdshot. This gun is very picky when come to ammo. From my short experience with it, any low brass 2-3/4 shells that are below 1250 fps will jam every other round. Large shell-like 3" buckshot tend to fail to chamber sometime. Also, avoid slug, I know a dude who shot federal factory slug and cracks the bolt face.

Michael, standard factory 12ga ammunition is fine. My brother has this and I have the Rock Island VR-80 and we have no issues firing any 12 gauge loads including slugs. Brenneke KO Slugs to be exact. We did experience some failure to cycle with low power bird shot but followed this advice of storing the shotgun with the bolt locked back to condition the spring and now even low power loads cycle fine. --- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pvo0QPd-PHw

Michael, I would worry about being able to find 12 ga ammo to buy. This shotgun will handle any round you can find to put through it. Sorry to say you will have to spend some money on ammo to put a hundred rounds or so through it for break in to get it as reliable as possible.

Just find some ammo and shoot it. No magic 12 ga round. Just whatever you can find.
