i have a 2 1/4" short rail on the bottom of the handguard will this fit or does it require a little more rail?

Yes, This will fit fine on a 2 1/4" short rail. Mine takes around an inch and a half of pic rail space. Cheers.

Robert, this will fit no issue Sir. You could fit 1.5 of these hand grips on a 2 1/4" short rail. Cheers and stay safe!
