Martin, it is technically a Carbine since it uses a Pistol caliber which the ATF classifies as a Rifle. Cheers and stay safe!

It is a rifle barrel is 17" (16" and over is rifle lenght) it also has an m4 stock, pistols are only permitted to have a brace, unless you register it as an SBR (Short barreled rifle) with the atf, and pay for your tax stamp.
