Do you prefer semi-auto or pump action? If you don't a lot of shooting experience and want something easy to shoot, then I recommend 12 GA semi auto. Look for something with less than 22inch of barrel, preferably 18.5 inch barrel which is the shortest you can go with non-NFA shotgun. Long barrel is no good for tight home defense. Anything from Mossberg, Benelli, Berretta, Winchester, CZ, and Browning is good as they are reputable manufacturer. Recoil depends on your ammo/shell choice.
Edward, the PW Arms AR-12 will fit the bill nicely and is reliable. I purchased mine when the price was lower, around $495 early last year but, it is nice for the money and patterns very well with a wide range of shot. Cheers and stay safe!
