Bruce, it is a muzzle break and yes it is removable.

Bruce, this is an A2 style flash hider and is removable. It has a 1/2x28 RH thread pitch. It can be a bear to get off so be very careful as the rifle is not AR sturdy : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEOzYz_l_X8
