I was watching a video review of this gun and the speaker said something about a proprietary nut holding this handguard, which made me think that it might be hard if not impossible to upgrade or change out this handguard in the future (which would seem very strange). Can someone confirm if this handguard is connected in the 'standard' way to the upper and can be readily changed, if desired?

Michael, Colt does not use a proprietary nut. They simply went from a carbine to a mid-length gas system for a smoother slightly less recoiling rifle(what other manufactures were doing many years ago).  You can verify this here : Tel: 800-962-COLT (2658) * Mon-Fri 9am to 5pm EST
