Hey, I am a looking for a versatile first shotgun that wont break the bank. I enjoy skeet/trap shooting but honestly will probably shoot skeet/trap once a year at best. Will the short barrel make that much of a difference?

I actually use the Maverick 88 for skeet shooting, hunting, and just for all around target practice. It's a very versatile gun and will work for just about anything. On the plus side it holds a few more rounds as well, which comes in especially well for skeet shooting. I've also used mine dove hunting and did very well if that tells you anything. Good luck.
