Stoeger is part of the Benneli, Beretta family, and between the 3 they've been making guns for a long time. Berreta is the oldest firearm company in the world, and has had military contracts all over the world (including USA) for a long time as well. I've never owned a Stoeger but I would without hesitation, as their parent company takes pride in manufacturing quality products, and stand behind all their brands. The one thing I would warn about is that after market accessories for the STR-9C may be hard to find, stuff like sights, holsters, etc.... if your wanting a pistol you can really trick out and customize, this might not be a good choice. If you want a fairly priced reliable carry pistol, that's good to go out the box, this will do nicely.
Lisa, Stoeger is a quality handgun. Speaking from experience, my brother has a Compact and Full Size Stoeger and they keep up with our Glock's, Canik's, Ruger's and other quality handguns in durability and reliability no issues. As a self defense handgun, you will be well served. Cheers and stay safe!
