Dennis, 5.56NATO is never recommended to be fired in a .223 chamber. For warranty and safety reasons, I would seek counsel from Savage Customer Service as they maintain your warranty at (800) 370-0708 --- Monday through Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM EST

Barrel is stamped 223, so I'd stick to 223 only, there is a lot of different ammo for most any purpose (hunting, target practice, plinking, etc....) that it won't affect the usability of this gun. But running 556 could damage the rifle.
