Douglas, the grip size will be the same so it will come down to barrel length on this. For "Home Defense" it's pretty much a wash. I personally would get the 5 inch barrel (Since you will not be carrying concealed) simply for the edge in ballistic stopping power.
for all practical purposes there is no difference pick the one you like. the grip size is the same the only difference is that the commander has a 3/4 inch shorter barrel. the full size should be a little more accurate due to the longer sighting plane. for me the full size feels better and better balanced
The 1911 was designed with the 5 inch barrel and functions best with that length barrel and slide. I' stick with the original design for reliability.
