Michael, it should hold 20ga shells snugly enough but, Since Allen Company says it's for 12ga, I would confirm with their Customer Service at https://byallen.com/contact-us

The ones I have experience with hold 20ga shells just fine. The only issue is if you ever use it on a 12ga, it might stretch the loops so they no longer hold 20ga shells.

when they are NEW yes but they stretch out and get loose quickly
