Can the barrel be swapped between a 40 cal and 357 with the sig sauer p229.
Family likes to shoot a wide variety of calibers and i like to keep my options open, esp when i can utilize the different caliber for different occasions. (and shoot cheaper ammo)

Yes, That's pretty much it. A swap between 40 and 357 only involve a barrel change. 9mm to another caliber would require the Sig X-change kit.

wow I would have thought it would need a different weight recoil spring (along with barrel)but after research it appears that the spring is the same
