I'd say the best starter pistol would either be a Walther p22, it's a 22lr and is small light and great pistol and can be had for 250-300. Another great pistol would be the canik tp9 sf elite, it's a 9mm and again great pistol, comes with a holster, great trigger, you can find them for 350-400. I own both and either one would be perfect. for the Walther p22 I'd recommend either CCI stinger, or CCI velicitor ammo for it. For the canik the two best self defense rounds you can get are federal hst, or speer gold dot gdhp. Hope this helps and good luck.

Best is to go to a range that test guns, and shoot several and see what feels good to you. If possible take a class on how to operate a handgun, as far as best ammo for deffense hollow points, best range ammo any that's cheаp

Please GO TO A LOCAL RANGE tat RENTS guns and try out as many as you can. what is best for you will become apparent and it is different for everyone 15-20 dollars spent in rent can be the thing that stops you from making a $400.00 mistake
