1996 was the first year Taurus® authorized/promoted the use of +P ammunition in their 38 Special revolvers. Taurus® 38 Specials made 1995 & earlier are not rated for +P ammunition

Gerard, yes Sir you absolutely can with no issue. The Defender is rated for the higher Pressure +P so the lower pressure regular 38 Special Ammo will have less recoil and muzzle blast. Cheers and stay safe!
