I have a Osprey Red dot sight.  I have a DPMS .223 with only rails no sight front or back. Is a front sight required to mount a red dot sight?

No, it is not necessary to have a front sight. Flip ups are just used for backup sights if a red dot fail.

No a red dot sight is like a scope and needs no other sights to operate.
