Do these two guns share the same frame size, i.e. medium frame? Or is the 627 larger? Hard to tell from pictures.

Secondly, are the basically same gun with different size barrel?

Both the 617 and the 627 share the same Frame" size. Larger than a S&W® J frame, but smaller than a K frame. The only difference between the two is barrel length (2¼" vs 4" vs 6½") and their sights. The 66 & 627 TRACKER™ have adjustable sights, the 617 is fixed sights.
