I received this shotgun thinking it would be at 5 + 1 capacity but it is 2 + 1 capacity instead. Did this happen to anyone whose when purchasing the shotgun and if so, what was the next step?

Josh, there is a magazine plug that needs to be removed. (Plugs are used to make the shotgun compliant for capacity restrictions when hunting). Video for plug removal (should be similar)  :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ARlaIdLNTw

When I was new to shotguns I found myself wondering the same thing with my Mossberg. There is a long wooden dowel in the magazine tube that needs to be removed. Your owners manual will help or plenty of videos on YouTube showing how to remove, very easy to do!!

As others have said there's a magazine plug in the magazine tube. Refer to your owners manual or Google how to remove a magazine tube plug and you'll find plenty of videos. Hope this helps.
