This may be a stupid question but can the brace be removed and gun still be functional or is a buffer tube employed that would prohibit this?

Yes, you can remove this and it'll still be functional. Just don't remove the buffer tube. Warning though these braces are just supposed to slide off but they are very tight and can be a hassle to remove. Hope this helps.
