Same concept as a revolver. Single action the trigger only performs one action, it drops the hammer. Double action it performs two actions, the trigger pulls the hammer back and drops the hammer. Single action is a nice short, light, crisp trigger pull while double action is long and heavy. Alot of people like to carry one in the chamber, hammer down so the first shot is double action. The slide pushes the hammer back so follow up shots are single action. Just depends how you prefer to carry. Don't believe there are any double/single action 1911s available. Plenty of semi automatics offer both though. Hope this helps
