This is an endlessly debated topic but the general consensus seems to be buckshot of whatever size between #4 and #000. 2 3/4 shells are generally seen as good enough, even "low recoil" lower velocity loadings are quite effective for defensive use while high velocity/magnum loads generally just contribute to over-penetration. More expensive options usually contain buffer material and copper or steel plated shot which is conducive to more accuracy and better shot patterning, however shotguns are still mostly considered short range tools. Ammo prices and availability are also not good right now, I would suggest searching for buckshot from multiple brands and testing them out at the range. Hornady, Winchester, and Federal are generally good brands, possibly also Fiocchi or Sellier & Bellot. Finding a particular brand and loading that feeds reliably is probably the most important consideration.
