Kira, a Semi-Auto will be more effective overall. It will be easier to stay focused on a potential target and easier for quicker follow up shots if needed. To get the most reliability out of a Semi-Auto, break it in with full power loads first, then test for reliability with your self defense load of choice. A pump is more reliable and also effective but slower and has more training needed to become close to the effectiveness of a Semi-Auto. I own both and am well versed in the use of either.
