Issac, yes long action is preferred. Unfortunately doesn't look like Howa shares this information anywhere. So I would contact howa for a definite answer at 1-800-553-4229 or email them at ( customer_service@legacysports.com ). Sorry can't give a definite answer but hope this helps some.

Isaac, as a hand-loader myself, I understand the benefit of long loading in a Long Action Rifle however, this 1500 has a Short Action Sir. Cheers and stay safe!
