Dennis, Yes. . 308 is actually a bit higher chamber pressure than 7.62x51, so 7.62 is perfectly safe to shoot from a . 308 but not the other way around. It is the exact same as you can shoot 223 out of a 5.56 but you cant shoot 5.56 out of a 223. So if you have some 7.62 NATO laying around shoot away. Hope this helps.
Dennis, all I can say is I have similar rifles in .308, Savage, Remington and Bergara and have been shooting 7.62x51 for decades with nary an issue with modern ammo. I have experienced only 1 issue with some old surplus 7.62x51 and determined it had hard primers. This is actual fact and not hearsay. Cheers and stay safe!
Dennis, you can fire common 7.62X51 military ammo in any currently produced rifle chambered for .308 Winchester. The current specification for 7.62×51 is a pressure limit of 50,000 psi, while the .308 pressure limit is SAAMI standardized at 62.000 psi, so you can safely shoot 7.62x51 from a .308, but not the other way around.
