Just bought a PC carbine and the backpacker stock myself and wrestled with the same thing. The type 1 mount is not threaded and includes a nut and several lengths of screws for installing into a stock with no existing mounts. The type 2 mount is threaded and does not come with hardware as it is intended to be added on to an existing type 1 mount by replacing the nut on the opposite side creating an ambidextrous setup. For the backpacker stock no mounts were included and there are just holes so you would need two type 1 mounts in order to have a forward and rear sling mount on one side of the stock. If you wanted a sling mount on both sides you would need two type 1 and two type 2 mounts.
Paul, are speaking of the Magpul Backpacker Stock, you just need the separate Sling Swivels. It comes with the TYPE 1 slots already. Most are Type 1 and Type 2 just refers to opposite side mounting via screw/nut reversal on the stock through the same Type 1 slot. Cheers and stay safe!
