It is the word Nitron with a few letters cut off which is the name for the black oxide finish that most Sig handguns have on their slides and other metal parts.

Jeff, NIT is short for NITRON as this pistol has a Black Nitron Slide Finish and also a XRAY3 Tritium Front Sight / Night Sight Rear Plate. Cheers and stay safe!
