Rodger, from my understanding the square butt was dropped from the 686 in 1996. The 686+ 7 shot was introduced in 1996, so all 686+ have a round butt. You could contact smith and Wesson at 1-800-331-0852 Mon-Fri 8:00AM-5:00PM or email them at ( qa@smith-wesson.com ) to double check but almost positive they're all round butt. Hope this helps.

Rodger, the old 686's had square butts, the newer ones have rounded butts. They changed from square butt to round butt in the mid 1990's. The question was from 2018, obviously no one did their homework before answering. Have a great day!
