David, yes, since this is a 5.56 it will handle 223 safely. All firearms chambered in 5.56 can also shoot 223. You just can't shoot 5.56 out of a firearm chambered in 223 because 5.56 has a higher chamber pressure and can cause damage. Since 223 has a lower chamber pressure it's perfectly safe in a 5.56. hope this helps.
