Christopher, night sights are sights that glow in the dark to get on target easier at night time. The ridges on the bottom front are to attach accessories like a flashlight or laser. This is a upgraded model, the other ones don't have the ridges, so you can't add accessories. Hope this helps.
Christopher, night sights glow in the dark. They are designed to allow a shooter to find and align his sights in the dark. Most night sights are made with Tritium, which is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Sights made with Tritium are treated with a phosphor material that reacts with the Tritium's radioactive elements to become phosphorescent. The ridges you refer to is called a rail, accessory rail, or pic rail, on which you can mount a flashlight or laser. Have a great day!
