Never owned a gun before. I've been to the range twice and fired a few different guns. I liked the Glock 17. My question is: Is a Glock 17 5th generation for $539.00 a good price? What's a good first handgun that is maybe less expensive. Apologies, complete newbie here. Thanks.

Do you want a range gun/home defense or concealed carry gun? Glock 17 is a full-size pistol so it's great as a range gun and usable for home defense. Conceal carry with G17, a bit too big. If you want Glock but cheaper, I highly recommend PSA Dagger (not sold on this site) which is a Glock 19 Gen 3 clone made by PSA for $299. G19 is a bit more compact than G17 but it shoot as good in my opinion. I own G19 gen 5 and I wish I bough gen 3 instead. Not only gen is cheaper and is just as good as gen 5, because the gen 3 patent expire, there is HUGE aftermarket available for you to customize your gun. You can also get polymer 80 series of pistol which is also Glock gen 3 clones with better frame and a little bit cheaper (less than $500 on this site). Dale, the Glock 17 would be a great first time pistol for somebody. They're very reliable, accurate and easy to learn. If you want something a little cheaper I 100% agree with trin about caniks tp9 series, they're phenomenal pistols for the price. I own the canik tp9 SF elite and it quickly became one of my favorite pistols and I own quite a few nice ones. Here's a link to the one I'd recommend but any canik is good. Dale, the G17 is excellent. With a little training and familiarization, most handguns these days would work. Some of the best bang for the buck firearms that are well built, reliable and worth mentioning are, Canik, SAR9, Taurus and Beretta.
