Yes, HV round will be fine with HV piston. I found 3 inch birdshot and buckshot cycle well. It tends to jam before the first 50 rounds, but it's been running well after break-in and cleaning. The first 50 was all birdshot too, mostly 3" Federal Speedshok and also 2 3/4" Federal Heavy Field. I hope this helps!
