Is this rifle legal to own in New York if I am a civilian? Is this considered an assault rifle or a hunting rifle? I currently own a Savage 111 and a Remington M710 and walked in/out of the gun store with it so I don't think it should be a problem, right?

This is a no no in New York. The detachable mag with telescopic stock, muzzle brake, pistol grip all combined make it an assault weapon to the state of NY. Sorry to say this, but its banned for NY.

Unfortunately this rifle has "Felony" written all over it in NY Michael. If a rifle has a "Detachable Magazine" and one or more of the following are prohibited****Note, this rifle has more than 4 of these)*****  :  (1).
Folding / telescoping stock  -  (2). Pistol grip  -  (3). Thumbhole stock  -  (4). Fore - grip   -  (50. Bayonet lug  -  (6). Flash suppressor  -  (7). Muzzle brake  -  (8). Muzzle compensator  -  (09. - Threaded barrel  -  (10). Grenade launcher  -  (11). Over 10 round capacity.
