.45 Colt and .45 Long Colt are both common names for the same rimmed, straight-walled cartridge originally developed with the Colt Single Action Army revolver. I believe the "long" originates as a way to differentiate this cartridge from the much newer .45 ACP which has also at times been referred to as .45 Colt.

Hi James and welcome. .45 Colt commonly called (LC Long Colt) are the same cartridge. .45 Colt (LC Long Colt) rounds - on average - achieve a velocity of about 1050 feet per second (fps) while .454 Casull rounds travel at a velocity of 1600 fps. Furthermore, the muzzle energy of a .45 Colt (LC Long Colt) round averages out to 500 ft-lb, while a .454 Casull round averages out to about 1700 ft-lb. Cheers and stay safe

James, guessing you mean 45 LC/long Colt and 45 Colt and yes they're the exact same. Not sure why manufacturers like to make it confusing and give the same cartridge a bunch of names but that's the case. If you mean 454 casull then no 454 casull has much higher velocity/pressure and definitely not recommended in a 45colt/LC. Although some firearms chambered in 454 casull can also fire 45 Colt. Hello James, .45 Colt and .45 Long Colt are the same cartridge. Some time ago, the .45 Colt started being referred to as the .45 Long Colt to differentiate it from the shorter .45 Smith & Wesson—often referred to as the .45 Schofield, adopted in 1875.
