Many people believe it helps with sighting also It leads you into pointing the gun correctly if you have to take aim. Hard-core shooters would never see the rib, as they quickly learn to point as if the gun was an arm with an index finger. And they keep both eyes open. Those of us who have opposite eye-dominance have to somehow line up the barrel with a sighting aid. I like the holographic sights, but the weather here is a bit extreme.

No they are not the same thing in any way. Ports are designed to redirect gas pressure to control and reduce muzzle flip. Some designs will help reduce felt recoil. A vent rib is device to provide a clean sight picture by dispersing heat waves from the barrel and giving smooth, flat, even sight line. Some are also textured to reduce glare. Hope this helps.
