Something is better than nothing but, I wouldn't put my life on the line with a rimfire .22lr. I own 4 different. 22lr rifles and here and there you can get a light strike causing the primer not to ignite the powder and send the bullet. Personally, I'd go with any pump shotgun for home defense if you don't want a pistol. If you're concerned about recoil get a 20 gauge or .410. Even 12 gauge has lighter recoil ammo for home defense.
