Joshua, this can be used with or without the pin still in. Some reviewers are reporting problems when leaving retainer pin in. "This is an interesting replacement for a traditional buffer and spring but it has a flaw. The rubber piece when used with a retainer spring rides too hard against the retainer and makes separating the upper and lower difficult to the point where I had to wrench it open and when I did so the rubber o-ring popped off." Stay safe & have a great day!
