Hi Mark, I would try 130g for target rounds. Just go with a better round. I like Sig's stuff and Nosler but these will work nicely https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/65466

I would try theses https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/656_2081_10000566/products_id/719015038/Legend%20AMMO%20COWBOY%20ACTION%20.38%20SPL%20RNFP%2050%20Rounds/ They are reduced velocity "cowboy" loads the only real way to know what works for you and your gun is to try as many different rounds as you can until you find the one that "works"
Welcome Mark. Make sure your practice load is similar ballistic wise to your carry load. This will keep your developed muscle memory and recoil control consistent. An excellent low recoil dual purpose self defense round is : https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1001573970/hornady-critical-defense-lite-ammunition-38-special-90-grain-flex-tip-expanding-box-of-25
These are low recoil and come in a self defense configuration too. The composite bullets are half the weight and half the recoil of lead. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/713078711 https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/18452/Ruger+38SPL+77GR+ARX+SELF+DEFENSE+BRASS+20%2F10
