Hi Dennis and welcome. It is Gas Operated, and reliability is actually quite good. It handles the vast majority of shells no issue that are 1150 plus feet per second or more. It is gas operated Reviews appear to be mixed it seems to do will with all shells after a 300 round brake in long term reliability is unknown as most people who buy them are occasional shooters looking at a budget shotgun
