I'm a huge fan of the red dot!

I prefer the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x24. Has a lit reticle for low light conditions. The x1 zoom is great for close range and easy target acquisition. But this is only my preference, it all depends on what you are wanting to do with your AR

it will depend on your plans for the rifle, do you plan on shooting any longer ranges or just closer? if say 200 yards and in I would consider a red dot with a 2 moa dot. if further distance say out to 400 yards then I would go a low power variable scope (LPV) like an illuminated 1-4 to 1-8 power scope with as close to a true 1x as you can get and then you also get the benefit of a red dot for close in stuff.

Have not used a red dot enough to justify arguing for it. A 1-4x, 1-6x or 2-8x scope will allow for more flexibility of use. The higher magnification, the more adequate for mid-range hunting applications.

Best thing about the AR platform is that you can do it all the vortex spit fire is a great red dot and then you can add the vortex 3x flip to side magnifier to stretch it out a little bit

Depends on what you prefer. I shot my last match with an iron sighted AR because there were no targets over 175 yards and lots of close range hosing. I use the AR with the red dot (Vor-tex Strike Fire) if I will need to go to 400 yards (LaRue targets). If you will hunt varmints a compact scope may be the best option. Large scopes just seem out of place on an AR unless it's a full rifle.

I love my Aimpoint Comp M2. I would also highly recommend getting some flip sights. You can find USMC surplus KAC rear sights for $60 each on ebay.

I love my tru glow 1x6x24 scope...from my ak back to my ar its awesome....comes with 308 and 223 turrets....spot on allways....red dot i really dont care for...rather use my irons close up...

I have a DPMS 223/5.56 that I've customized and have both a red dot and folding sights installed. If I want to use the folding sights, I turn off the red dot (if it's on) and flip up the "iron sights". I can clearly see the front post thru the glass of the red dot sight. As it turns out this is a very common set up on many ARs. My DPSM does not have a carrying handle or the raised front "sight tower" that is common on many military style ARs. There is a Picittinay rail across the top of the upper receiver, and the gas block (which is the same elevation as the upper) also has a Picatinny rail. If you are hunting deer such as white tail, where the distances are not that not much beyond a couple hundred yards or most likely less in wooded areas, a red dot sight or low magnification sight of 4x or less is more than adequate. The 223/5.56 round is not, nor was it designed for long range and rapidly depletes velocity and kinetic energy at long distances. The folding sight works quite well at
