For the most part, you can buy a 7.62x39 upper and just pin it onto a standard 5.56 AR-15 lower. You will need to use 7.62x39 magazines since the taper of the AK round is much more substantial than the 5.56 round. This is why 30 round AK mags have that very noticeable curve to them.
